PERCEBES project: A human exclusion experiment

What is the PERCEBES project?

PERCEBES project aim to address the recovery of exploited stalked barnacle populations in SW Europe (France, Spain and Portugal) by the use of steel cages to study the human exclusion effect on the barnacle populations.

The stalked barnacle (Pollicipes pollicipes) fishery in the Asturian coast (North Spain) is currently a very important component of the artisanal fleet.

Where does it take place?

The project has experimental stations in 4 different locations: Alentejo (SW Portugal), Atlantic Galicia (NW Spain), West Coast of Asturias (N Spain) and South Brittany (North of the Bay of Biscay, France).

In my case, I have been working on the 3 experimental sites within the West Coast of Asturias (located in the map): Las Salsinas, Las Llanas and La Cruz from West to East.

From hard conditions in the field to image analysis

Due to the current global situation it was not possible for me to take part in the fieldwork of the project. However, the work continues after the fieldwork when the images arrive into the lab.

My Professional Practice consisted of analysing all the images from the past 2 years (from July 2017 to July 2019).
